Em 2006 Stephanie Merritt publicava a primeira entrevista com José Saramago num jornal inglês — no The Guardian: «I think the novel is not so much a literary genre, but a literary space, like a sea that is filled by many rivers. The novel receives streams of science, philosophy, poetry and contains all of these; it's not simply telling a story.»


Em 2008, nova entrevista de José Saramago ao The Guardian (a Maya Jaggi): «I don't make excuses for what communist regimes have done. But I have the right to keep my ideas.»
